La belle dame sans merci

Amo i fumetti! Questo per chi mi conosce poco può sembrate un statement privo di sostanza se non fosse per le tre camere e le innumerevoli librerie che ho riempito con la mia disomogenea collezzione.

Quello che adoro di più del collezzionare fumetti è quando in fumetteria, o ad una mostra, trovi un fumetto accattivante e sconosciuto, e scopri che è un capolavoro. Artesia di Mark S. Smylei, autore completo di testi e disegni, è un racconto Fantasy, dal carattere fortemente medioevale e gustosamente Heroic Fantasy (Moorcock e Howard tanto per intenderci).

Visivamente è difficile da inquadrare in un genere fumettistico: Fumetto americano? Graphic Novel? Bande Dessinée? La storia, di una bellezza non comune, scorre piacevolvente coronata da una grafica inusuale, a tratti graffiante ma di una bellezza rara e mai scontata.

Non mi dilungo a darvi una sinossi della storia, trovate i fumetti e leggetela: non lo rimpiangerete.

In italiano potete trovare il primo volume, ARTESIA BESIEGED (it), pubblicato a puntate dulla rivista Star Fantasy ed il secondo, ARTESIA AFIELD (it), splittato su due volume pubblicati sulla collana Speciale Star Fantasy , entrambi editi dalla Star Comics.

I love comics! Who knows me well knows that the direct consequence of such a statement is 3 rooms stuffed with an impressive quantity of comics of any kind. The most trilling and exciting moment in the life of a comics collector is when, rooming across a comics shop or a comic-con you find a comic you never heard of that eventually turns in to a masterpiece.

Artesia by Mark S. Smylei, is one of those unknown masterpiece. Smylei, author of both Story and Drawings, crafted a Heroic Fantasy universe (Moorcock e Howard as a reference; you know what I mean!), with a deep Medieval vein.

The story is fabulous and the drawings are simply breath taking. Enough to say that is you are a lover of the old “Sword & Sorcery” as I am, you have to read Artesia. Here you can find a link to the first three volumes:

L'uomo senza paura / Dead end man

Sandy Collora è senza dubbio un personaggio estremamente interessante. Il regita, classe 1968, che ha incominciato a HOLLYWOOD come addetto agli effetti speciali ha tra i suoi lavori qualche filmetto del tipo Dogma (1999); Men in Black (1997); The Crow (1994); Guyver: Dark Hero (1994); Predator 2 (1990); A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child (1989) e Leviathan (1989).

L'elenco, non completo, é impressionate, anche se non è per il suo curriculum che Sandy è saltato alla ribalta nel 2003 ma bensì per il suo cortometraggio Batman: Dead End (2003). Questo breve filmino, descritto a Kevin Smith come "il miglior ritratto del cavaliere mascherato che si sia mai visto su video", è un capolavoro.

Prima ancora che fosse presentato alla COMICON di San Diego del 2003 aveva gia registrato 1'600'000 visioni dalla sua apparizione sul portale THEFORCE.NET. La cosa all'epoca aveva preso tali dimensioni da divenire un vero e proprio fenomeno POP con tanto di citazioni e commenti, come ad esempio la strip di PVPOnline.com qui di seguito.

Sandy ha in seguito prodotto un altro breve cortometrtaggio, questa volta dallo sitle trailer, dal titolo World's Finest (2004) dove ritrae l'uomo di Kripton e l'uomo dall'oscuro mantello in azione fianco a fianco, decisamente gustoso.

Ora, quello che tutti, con le dita incrociate, ci chiediamo è: quandè che il sig. Collora riceverà abbastanza fondi per fare un film tutto intero? Aspettando Godot potete visitare il sito del suo studio per rifarvi gli occhi.

World's Finest (2004)


Sandy Collora is probably one of the most interesting HOLLYWOOD characters I’ve ever heard of. Not fully satisfied of a brilliant carrier in Visual Effects, he worked for some flicks like Dogma (1999); Men in Black (1997); The Crow (1994); Guyver: Dark Hero (1994); Predator 2 (1990); A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child (1989) e Leviathan (1989), the guy decided to produce a short movie of it’s own.

Gathered some friends and borrowed some material from friends working at the studios he produced the short movie Batman: Dead End (2003) witch did the following thing: after been published on the portal THEFORCE.NET it was viewed by more then 1'600'000 before that Sandy could even present it at the COMICON 2003. The flick became a POP Culture phenomenon inspiring many comment all along the WEB, like the PVPOnline.com strip above.

Rumours are not that boosting that much: the short movie, based on a Batman meet Alien Vs Predator story, is fabulous and it looks awesome: Kevin Smith described it as “the greatest on-screen portrayal of Batman ever”.

Following the success of the film, Sandy produced another short movie called World's Finest (2004). This time Superman and Batman Team up and fight together the DC comics bad ass villains. The movie looks like a trailer of a bigger movie, but the statement at the beginning of it states clearly that “sorry folks, it’s just what it is”.

Now that u know who is Sandy Collora I think u will start to wonder, as I am, “when the guys will receive enough money to produce a Real Big Awesome movie?
